Tyramine-producing streptococci in neonatal diarrhoea.
An outbreak of neonatal diarrhoea associated with large numbers of Streptococcus faecalis var. zymogenes is described.A follow-up survey showed that 23.3% of 347 healthy babies carried this organism without ill effect. The tyrosine decarboxylase activity of the streptococci from both sick and healthy babies was identically high. It is suggested that the tyramine-producing activity of these stre...
متن کاملThe serological typing of group D streptococci associated with outbreaks of neonatal diarrhoea.
By the preparation of specific type sera 24 types of streptococci within group D are designated on the basis of agglutination tests. Subtypes associated with three of these types are indicated by reciprocal absorption. Precipitin tests with absorbed sera substantiate the division of types by agglutination. Of 353 strains of streptococci identified serologically as group D and further specified ...
متن کاملCatalase-producing strains of streptococci.
The genus Streptococcus includes organisms which are homofermentative, facultative with respect to oxygen, fastidious in their nutrient requirements, without cytochrome system, and are therefore considered to be catalase negative. Recent work in this laboratory revealed two strains of several hundred streptococci, screened from silage fermentations, that were capable of producing catalase. They...
متن کاملCharacterization of the tyramine-producing pathway in Sporolactobacillus sp. P3J.
A sporulated lactic acid bacterium (LAB) isolated from cider must was shown to harbour the tdc gene encoding tyrosine decarboxylase. The isolate belonged to the Sporolactobacillus genus and may correspond to a novel species. The ability of the tdc-positive strain, Sporolactobacillus sp. strain P3J, to produce tyramine in vitro was demonstrated by using HPLC. A 7535 bp nucleotide sequence harbou...
متن کاملGroup B streptococci in neonatal deaths.
Clinical microbiologists are reminded to look for group B streptococci in neonatal infants. We report four deaths, one with meningitis, occurring among 14 such infected newborn infants at our institution; of the nursing staff, 31% were also carriers of group B streptococci.
